It should come as no surprise that natural disasters could create a fertile environment for cybercriminals to operate in, especially if climate change increases the frequency of such cyber incidents.
Natural disasters are an excellent illustration of the type of significant occurrence that produces enough turmoil for cybercriminals to thrive since it weakens the system and resources enough to give hackers an easier path in.
A recent exercise conducted by American city of Indiana – of around 500 professionals from across the city, including healthcare practitioners, National Guard personnel, and officials from state, local, and federal institutions, participated in the exercise.
The scenario was created to demonstrate the likelihood of cybercriminals looking to profit from an already serious situation, as well as how people who are already stretched to their limits can effectively respond to ensure critical infrastructure is not further harmed than the natural disaster already has.
