As the Metaverse continues to grow in popularity, researchers from Trend Micro Search are warning of the emergence of a “darkverse” – a shadowy, unregulated corner of the virtual world where anything goes.
The Metaverse is a virtual world created by converging our physical world with the cyber world. It is a place where people can interact with each other online and in the physical world through augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies.
The Metaverse is constantly growing and expanding. As more and more people use AR and VR technologies, the Metaverse will continue to grow and evolve. Moreover, businesses see this as an opportunity. They are starting to invest in the Metaverse, which is expected to impact the economy significantly.
The “darkverse” is a term used by researchers to describe the shadowy, unregulated corner of the Metaverse. It is where anything goes and where there are no rules or boundaries. This can be a breeding ground for criminal activity, violence, and other unsavoury behaviour.
Research by Trend Micro Search identified the metaverse cyber threats due to the darkverse:
- NFTs have become a popular target for phishing, ransomware, fraud, and other attacks.
- The Metaverse is used to launder money by selling overpriced virtual real estate and NFTs.
- Manipulative narratives created by criminal and state actors are reaching vulnerable and receptive groups. Social engineering, propaganda, and fake news have profound implications in a cyber-physical world.
- Privacy is redefined in the Metaverse, and operators of metaverse-like rooms have unprecedented insight into the actions of users. Privacy as we know it no longer exists in the Metaverse.
While the benefits of the Metaverse are vast, ranging from social connection to economic opportunity, the darkverse represents a real and dangerous downside to this new technology. In the darkverse, there are no rules or boundaries, and anything is possible. This can be a breeding ground for criminal activity, violence, and other reprehensible behaviour.
“The Metaverse is a multi-billion-dollar, high-tech vision that will define the next internet age. While we don’t know exactly how it’s shaping up, we already need to start thinking about how it might be exploited by threat actors and how we can build our own to protect society in a meaningful way,” urged Udo Schneider, the IoT security evangelist at Trend Micro.
