Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP, Assistant Minister for Defense and Chair of the National Security Committee introduced the 2022 Defence Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Strategy and the Defence Cyber Security Strategy at a Defence ICT industry forum.
Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite said that the key to both strategies was enduring partnerships for Defence to take advantage of the experience and expertise of industry, academia, allies and regional partners.
“The geopolitical and socio-economic landscape has always determined Australia’s strategic environment,” said Assistant Minister Thistlethwaite. “Fast and exponential improvements in technology are defining today’s environment.”
“As our capabilities become more reliant on cutting-edge networked technologies, we must ensure that Defence is prepared to face sophisticated cyber threats and regional military modernisation. The technologies the Department of Defense use to focus on giving the Australian digital age an upper hand in the war.”
The Defence ICT Strategy provides for the effective use of data and its deployment to enhance situational awareness and decision-making, allowing the Australian military to deliver deadly and non-lethal effects via a linked ADF.
The Department of Defense’s Cyber Security Strategy outlines how the military will combat cyber assaults and ensure its capabilities are protected against attackers. It will take a joint and unified effort from the Defence ecosystem, including ADF and Australian Public Service personnel, suppliers, and the supply chain.
“The Albanese Government’s top priority is to protect our national security and interests. To enable the ADF to operate effectively on the battlefield requires modern, agile, and secure information and communication technology.”
300+ defence and ICT organisations attended the event to collaborate on how such capabilities can help achieve set missions. The event showed the importance of having a well-coordinated and secure information and communication technology infrastructure for the military to operate effectively on the modern battlefield. The strategies will help protect Australia’s interests against sophisticated cyber threats.
