The characters often use Burner phones in films and TV shows like Jason Bourne or The Wire. But why are they so popular, and why should you consider having one?
Unlike the usual iPhone or Android phones, Burner phones offer a degree of anonymity. It is usually a simple phone that only provides basic texting and calling functions. It usually doesn’t have GPS or the capability of connecting to the internet. Users aren’t also required to sign in with their email addresses to get the phone working, and on top of that, the SIM card usually isn’t connected to the user’s data.
Using a burner phone effectively safeguards the user’s privacy. They can make and receive calls anonymously, and on top of that, these devices are relatively cheap. These phones are sold almost anywhere and prepaid, offering users freedom from contract commitments.
Burner phones are usually depicted in shows as a way for their characters to be off the grid and conduct their criminal activities. Still, in real life, these phones offer practical advantages.
Culture and Tech writer Omar Gallaga notes that burner phones can be an excellent option for people who want a dedicated phone for their side hustles like Lyft driving. Users who would also want their kids to be able to reach friends and relatives and not worry about the device being lost or damaged can also consider purchasing a burner phone.
Senior director of research and trends in the Consumer Electronics Association Prabhat Agarwal says, “prepaid phones are not going away anytime soon. There are many groups for which prepaid makes a lot of sense.”
For people considering having a burner phone, Lifehacker writer David Murphy recommends first understanding what the users intend to do with it. Murphy states, “you’re not trying to buy a phone with features; you’re looking to buy a phone that is incredibly cheap and will allow you to call and text.”
