Millions of Australian smartphone users, Android or Apple, fall victim to ‘vampire bills’. These vampire bills are typically subscriptions the users aren’t actively aware of.

Apps typically trick users into signing up for subscriptions, with some being rather expensive. Other times users sign up for cheap subscriptions with the intent of cancelling but forget to do so.

According to Rhiannon Lewin, a national reporter, luckily, there is a reasonably simple way for users to check their subscriptions, whether they are using Android or Apple. Usually, subscriptions can be cancelled through the app. Others, however, need to be cancelled through the official app store.

Lewin noted, “For Apple users, their subscriptions live inside the settings app, rather than the App Store. By tapping your name at the top of the settings menu, you should see a tab for Subscriptions, press that. You’ll see all your subscriptions registered for through the App Store.”

The reporter also added that the menu contains information such as the billing date per subscription. It also provides information if the subscription is billed weekly, monthly or yearly, as well as how much it costs. The subscription can be cancelled through the menu by tapping the red Cancel Subscription Button at the bottom.

The process is entirely in the Google Play Store app for Android users. Sun News technology and science editor Sean Keach says, “First, unlock your Android phone and launch the Google Play store. Then tap Account, then go to the Payment & Subscriptions section. You can now tap on any subscription you want to end and choose Cancel Subscription. The Google Play store will then guide you through the cancellation process.”

According to Google, subscriptions are automatically renewed, and users are responsible for unsubscribing. Check subscriptions regularly to ensure users are not paying for services they are not maximising.
