The responsibility of cybersecurity usually falls on the laps of IT departments. However, the HR and Learning and Development (L&D) departments may be able to help IT as they continue their battle against threat actors.
Ransomware will still be the nation’s biggest cybersecurity threat in 2023, according to cybersecurity experts, with a few other issues including deep fakes and lost or leaked intellectual property research and development data following closely behind.
Ransomware will continue to be the “public enemy number 1” in cybersecurity, according to Red Access, an Israeli startup that developed the first agentless SaaS platform for secure surfing solutions.
Just before the year ended, The Guardian newspaper and website announced that it was hit with a ransomware attack. The attack caused The Guardian to close down its UK offices and significantly disrupted its operations. The official announcement of CEO Anna Bateson and editor-in-chief Katharine Viner disclosed that the hack was due to a successful phishing attempt and was able to gain access to a portion of the company’s network.
Bateson and Viner added that the attack was not specifically targeting the company and that the employees were asked to work from home as they contain the issue. Brian Warszona, UK cyber growth leader at professional services firm Marsh McLennan, noted that the frequency of cyber-attacks may have significant implications for HR departments.
“HR is increasingly called upon to help determine and enforce employee data permissions, train and enforce cybersecurity policies and procedures, and help respond to cyber events involving employees,” Warszona added.
He recommended that HR departments be more actively involved in safeguarding the company against cyber attacks, with a “more active regulatory environment, the pervasive use of technology and devices in employees’ work, and recognition of the importance of a strong organisational cybersecurity culture”.
Sekuro managing director Noel Allnutt’s commentary supported Warszona’s statement that HR should play a bigger role in cybersecurity. Allnutt stated that cybersecurity should be one of the priorities discussed by top management, and company policies regarding cybersecurity should provide employees sufficient knowledge and tools to minimise risks.
