International Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI) launched the first International Counter Ransomware Task operation on January 23, with Australia as its inaugural chair and coordinator.

Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security, Hon. Clare O’Neil said: “Ransomware represents a significant global threat, and Australia will continue to play a leading role working with international partners, industry, and the community to develop effective responses to combat cyber criminals and protect our people and institutions.”

“Recent cyber incidents in Australia and around the globe are a stark reminder of the insidious nature of ransomware and the ability of cyber criminals to cause widespread disruption and harm to broad sections of the community.” Minister O’Neil added.

The US White House National Security Council assisted in bringing 30 countries together virtually in October 2021 to form the CRI.

A second meeting was held in November 2022 with 37 participating members, which gave rise to creating a task force to create cross-sectoral tools and exchange cyber threat intelligence to improve early warning systems and stop assaults.

The task force would aid in consolidating frameworks for best practices and policy. It was formed in the Australian Department of Home Affairs’s Cyber and Critical Technology Coordination Center.

According to a statement from the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the cyber security projects under the ICRTF will be started in response to member requests for help and support opportunities to disrupt hostile actors as needed.

After adopting an offensive stance toward Optus in the wake of the significant data breach, O’Neil was suddenly confronted with an excessive number of breaches, some significantly more detrimental than others, such as the Medibank breach, which prompted the government to adopt a more supportive stance.

The International Counter Ransomware Task Force is essential in combating ransomware and protecting individuals and organizations from malicious activity.
