A recently released report from Bitdefender highlighted that Australia has slipped out of the Top 10 countries targeted by ransomware.

Bitdefender’s Threat Debrief for December 2022 revealed the various threats posed by cybercriminals.

“Spear phishing attacks are often used as an initial attack vector, and ransomware infection is often the final stage of the kill chain. For this report, we analysed malware detections collected in November 2022 from our static anti-malware engines,” Bitdefender Technical Solutions Director Martin Zugec said.

The research studies the most common ransomware families, the nations that are most frequently targeted by ransomware assaults, the most widely used Android trojans by online criminals, and sites that are the target of spoof attacks, in which the attackers pretend to be a legal URL.

Bitdefender examined malware detections throughout December 2022 and discovered 207 different ransomware families. Depending on the ongoing ransomware activities in various nations, the number of discovered malware families can change each month.

Australia was ranked ninth in the Threat Debrief November 2022 release, which examined the attacks of October. According to the most recent data, Australia and Romania have been dropped from the Top 10 countries attacked by ransomware, while China and France have been added.

In its database this month, Bitdefender discovered malware from 147 different nations. The threat posed by ransomware still affects practically everyone in the world. There are still a lot of opportunistic ransomware assaults, and the population’s size and frequency of detections are associated.

“Opportunistic adversaries and some Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) groups represent a higher percentage compared to groups that are more selective about their targets since they prefer volume over higher value,” Zugec said.

Despite the good news, ransomware remains a threat in Australia, and everyone must remain vigilant to protect their devices and data.
