Software developer OpenAI recently launched its newest product, ChatGPT. ChatGPT is an AI model that generates realistic responses based on user prompts. Recently, threat actors have been known to utilise this software to carry out their cyber attacks.

ChatGPT is an AI model programmed to be trained with large amounts of text data. According to its developers, it is deep-trained with text data from different resources such as books, articles, and the internet.

The software can respond coherently to user prompts with its state-of-the-art language model. Its response is designed to be relevant and context-aware, mimicking a real-life person.

Despite being relatively new, many cybersecurity experts have discovered that ChatGPT is now used to carry out cyber attacks. According to EM360 tech journalist Ellis Stewart, “Security experts from Blackberry recently launched an investigation into the risks of AI, revealing that the tool may already be used in a range of attacks from phishing campaigns to nation-state cyberattacks.”

Blackberry CTO for cybersecurity Shishir Singh also noted that there had been studies showing that cybercriminals have begun testing its capabilities for their malicious intent. Anthony Cuthbertson, the deputy technology editor for The Independent, reported that “The number of new posts about ChatGPT on the dark web grew seven-fold between January and February, while threads rose in popularity by 145 per cent.”

The editor also reported that NordVPN has been monitoring the chatter regarding ChatGPT and has dubbed it ‘the dark web’s hottest topic.’ According to the company, forums discuss how threat actors could hack ChatGPT, while others discuss how it can be used for phishing scams.

However, OpenAI stated that ChatGPT is trained to decline inappropriate requests. Nevertheless, cybersecurity experts deem this insufficient as the program’s vulnerabilities have been exposed when users could produce basic malware. Experts warn that the company should revisit and improve its security measures as cyber criminals have developed their skill sets exponentially.
