The 2023 State of Cloud-Native Security Report by Palo Alto Networks has been released to provide insight into the cloud adoption strategies and practices of 200 Australians.
Many organisations face challenges in automating cloud security and managing risks while transitioning their operations to the cloud.
As a result, they are now prioritising the early improvement of safety during development and opting for fewer vendors who can provide multiple security capabilities.
Due to the increase in hybrid work during the pandemic, organisations have expanded their use of clouds by over 25 per cent globally. In Australia, 89 per cent of businesses have increased their cloud usage by more than 30 per cent in the past year.
It has led to DevOps teams needing to deliver production code much faster, complicating application security and putting pressure on security organisations to keep up.
The survey shows 93 per cent of organisations in Australia struggle to detect and respond to cyber threats within one hour. They have expressed that their security measures are weak.
They need to improve several areas, such as gaining visibility into multiple clouds, consistent governance across accounts, and better incident response and investigation processes.
According to the report, many organisations in Australia need help with cloud migration, including struggles with security, compliance, and technical complexity.
Also, the report highlights that 75% of organisations have delegated cloud security responsibility to individual teams. However, 52% of them mentioned that most of their workforce needs an understanding of their security responsibilities.
There is a growing concern about the security of cloud-based applications that use pre-made software. If there is a vulnerability during development, it could put the entire application at risk.
For this reason, many companies are promoting closer collaboration between their application developers and security teams. Eighty-seven per cent of Australian respondents reported having security experts as part of their DevOps teams.
“It is essential to prioritise cloud workload security, as 75% of organisations release new or updated code weekly and nearly 40% do so daily,” Ankur Shah, senior vice president of Prisma Cloud at Palo Alto Networks, said.
