Cyber Security NSW, the NSW Department of Education, and various industry professionals worked together to create this.
A new cyber security course will be available to NSW secondary school students from 2023 onwards.
Developed in collaboration with the NSW Department of Education, Cyber Security NSW, and industry professionals, the course is currently being piloted on the open-source platform Cyber City.
The platform will supposedly host the iSTEM cyber security elective, which joins science, technology, engineering, and mathematics forces.
The Minister for Education and Early Learning, Sarah Mitchell, announced that the ‘Cyber City’ will provide students with simulations to construct, manage and automate infrastructures like hydro dams, power grids, and satellite telecommunications on an intelligent city network.
“Cyber City gives teachers the tools to create relevant and engaging lessons for students. It is teaching skills beyond just awareness, empowering Australia’s future cyber security workforce,” Sarah said.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello noted that Cyber Security NSW played a crucial part in creating the programs and resources necessary to deliver this content effectively.
“From learning the fundamentals of cyber security and its important impact on day-to-day life to building hardware and gaining hands-on experience with coding, we are preparing our students for future careers in cyber,” he commented.
“Whether it is learning how data is sent from one device to another, how cyber technology is used in cities and regions, or understanding the importance cyber security has across different parts of people’s lives – as technology grows and evolves, it is important we give students the skills they need for a digital world,” Dominello stated.
Cyber Security NSW is focusing on upskilling women’s cyber security skills through sponsorships and funding for the not-for-profit organisation Australian Women in Security Network. It comes only weeks after it announced its involvement with education in secondary schools.
