Some Meadows Medical Centre patients in Mullumbimby received an email informing them of a breach on their email accounts.
Last week, several Meadows Medical Centre patients in Mullumbimby got an email notifying them that their “email addresses were hijacked.”
According to The Echo, they informed the patients and everyone in our community that no personal or medical information was obtained.
On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, Meadows Medical Centre was the victim of a Phishing attack, said Kristy Van Wyk, Practice Manager.
One of their email addresses was hijacked. The automated attack flooded big groups of suggested contacts with a phoney email from Meadows Medical Centre offering a link to a New Contract within minutes.
‘The email link for “New Contract Documents Received” is a phishing scam that was classed as spam.
This letter attempts to dupe the recipient into exposing their email account login details by pretending to have received documents about a new contract. Some are attached to harmful files, while others have a website link to download a dangerous file.
“Within 16 minutes of the first email being sent, we shut down our email account and prevented any further emails from being sent,” said Wyk.
‘We immediately advised those affected through an automated message on our phone system and by follow-up email,” Wyk added.
The Meadows Medical Centre notified the authorities, including the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Australian Cyber Security Centre. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has its means of combating cyber security breaches. They encourage anyone to immediately report suspicious emails and activities to their website cyber.gov.au.
Anyone who receives this email should not click on the link. Those who already have should immediately take action and modify their email account. They should reset their password and set security OTPs or verification steps when a new device tries to log in. Change some settings regarding the blocking of malicious emails.
