On February 14, the Defence Strategic Review’s final report, authored by Sir Angus Houston and Professor Stephen Smith, was handed to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Houston and Smith have been tasked with investigating and delivering recommendations to the government regarding the structure, readiness, posture, and investment objectives of the Australian Defence Force as part of the DSR, which was announced in August last year.

“The Defence Strategic Review will help prepare Australia to effectively respond to the changing regional and global strategic environment and ensure Defence’s capability and structure is fit for purpose and delivers the greatest return on investment.” Hon Anthony Albanese MP said.

The DSR, conducted over six months, benefited from consultations with more than 150 people and experts, including defence officials, Australian Defence Force members, defence industry professionals, national security think tanks and academics, state and territory representatives, and interest group representatives.

Additionally, the general public, interested parties, organisations, and state and territory governments submitted more than 360 documents to the Review’s Leads.

“The Defence Strategic Review is an ambitious and extensive examination of our strategic circumstances and will underpin our Defence policy for decades to come,” Hon Richard Marles MP said. “Australia must be resolute in its responsibility to safeguard our region and keep adversaries further from our shores.”

The study enables the Department of Defence to recognise the potential of technology to address many of its well-known weaknesses in its ICT infrastructure, cybersecurity, training, skills, and procurement.

Australia is currently highly susceptible to coercion in the cyber and space realms, as well as disruptions to its vital infrastructure and energy supply.

Defence is still in the process of upgrading its outdated analog networked system to a contemporary digital one.

In order to achieve the best results for the country, the Defence Strategic Review urges Australians to remain informed of the potential benefits and hazards related to its recommendations.
