The Good Guys have recently confirmed reports of a massive data breach where the personal information of millions of customers was accessed.

The company claimed that an estimated 1.5 million “Concierge” members of The Good Guys’ rewards program had their names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses accessed.

“The Good Guys is extremely disappointed that My Rewards, a former services provider, has experienced this breach, and we apologise for any concern that this may cause,” a spokesperson said.

“The Good Guys is directly contacting Concierge members who the My Rewards data breach may have impacted.”

Customers who gave their date of birth had that information compromised in around 15,000 instances, while 325,000 consumers who had registered My Rewards accounts as Concierge members had their passwords taken.

According to a spokeswoman for the electronic retailer, Pegasus Group Australia Pty Limited, now known as My Rewards Pty Ltd, was likely the target of a cyberattack in August 2021 but had just been made aware of it this month.

My Rewards no longer has any customer information from The Good Guys, the company claimed, and it no longer uses the provider for its rewards program.

According to Managing Director Biag Capasso, the company has alerted the appropriate authorities about the attack and will assist clients with additional inquiries.

“While we understand that no personal identity documents or financial information such as driver’s licence, passport, or credit card data are involved, we have notified the OAIC of the incident, and we are contacting all those affected,” Capasso said.

A representative for My Rewards stated that the business was collaborating with the Federal Government and did not anticipate the breach to result in significant harm.

The incident serves as a reminder to companies of the need to ensure that their customers’ data is safe and secure and highlights the importance of following best practices regarding cybersecurity.
