After Mark Zuckerberg’s recent announcement of a new subscription product’s trial in Australia and New Zealand, Facebook users can pay $20 monthly for a higher service on the network.
“This week, we’re starting to roll out Meta Verified — a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support,” Zuckerberg wrote on a post.
After providing Facebook with proof of identification, those who choose to pay the monthly cost will have their accounts verified with a “blue tick.”
With what Facebook refers to as “proactive account monitoring,” this new level of service will also provide a higher level of protection from impersonation.
There have been discussions about adding to the platform’s visibility and reach and creating special stickers and photos for use in postings on Facebook and Instagram.
In addition, subscription members will have “access to a real person for frequent account concerns,” a level of customer support not yet available on Facebook.
The decision was made just a few months after Elon Musk attracted notice for his choice to demand a monthly fee for “Blue Tick” authentication on Twitter after buying the firm.
While Musk thinks the subscription service is an effort to reduce the number of Robot accounts, Facebook today claimed their subscription bundle strategy was “to help up-and-coming creators grow their presence and build community faster.”
Following the Optus and Medibank data breaches late last year, Australians are concerned that Facebook has not yet explained the procedure for confirming government identification documents or how that data would be maintained.
It remains to be seen whether users find it worth investing in, but given the success of Facebook’s free tier, this new subscription-based service could be a big hit for the company.
