The Australian government plans to appoint key personnel who will protect Australians from the threat of cyberattacks.
A roundtable was held in Sydney on Monday, and one agenda is the country’s cyber security. As a solution, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced they would assign a coordinator for cybersecurity.
“As part of this process, we are announcing a coordinator for cybersecurity,” he said.
“We want that coordination to be done centrally, so it’s most effective; that’s why that will be located in the Department of Home Affairs.
“I don’t underestimate the challenge we are facing … it will need adaptation from us and for business and for the government to make sure we keep on top of this.”
The biggest cyber heists last year, with Optus and Medibank as the victims, have pushed government officials to devise ways to protect the whole country.
Albanese said cybersecurity is national security, and its focus is to strengthen Australia’s cybersecurity. The main goal is to protect businesses and individuals from uninvited entrants that expose their confidential data to the public.
“We recognise it is an essential part of life, the way that every Australian and every business and every community organisation deals with each other on a day-to-day basis.”
“It is critical to maintaining confidence in your commercial dealings and also in your intellectual property, which is often the foundation of your wealth creation.
“It’s also vital to individuals. Individuals quite rightly feel violated when their details are online. It is no different from someone breaking into your house and stealing something from you because it is your property, and in some cases, it’s your identity as well,” Albanese added.
He claimed the issue of cybersecurity was a “rapidly evolving threat,” acknowledging state-sponsored attacks as an area of concern.
Aside from the attacks brought by private groups, geopolitical attacks or state-sponsored cyber threats have become more prevalent. The coordinator will work out of the Department of Home Affairs; the precise scope of their authority will be defined at a roundtable of business leaders and government heads.Clare O’Neil, the home affairs minister, will be in charge of the organisation, according to Albanese.
