The “Have You Been Hacked?” service allows users to check whether their email address or other online account has been compromised in a data breach.
If your email address is found in a data breach, the ACSC will advise you on what steps to take to protect yourself from further harm.
The launch of the “Have You Been Hacked?” service comes as the ACSC releases its Cyber Security Survey, which shows Australians are becoming more aware of cybercrime.
“The 2019 survey results show that Australians are increasingly recognising the importance of cyber security, with awareness of the threat of cybercrime growing and more people taking steps to protect themselves online,” said Minister for Home Affairs Clare O’Neil.
“The survey also found that while there has been an increase in the number of people who have experienced a cyber security incident, the majority of Australians are still not taking basic cyber security precautions.”
This new tool helps potential hacking victims by guiding them through several scenarios. With this, they can assess whether or not they have been hacked and learn how to respond in that situation.
Ransomware assaults, malware infections, email breaches and identity theft are just a few of the possible scenarios. Ransomware attacks, for example, are designed to hold data hostage until a ransom is paid. Malware infection occurs when a harmful program is downloaded onto your computer from an unknown source or via the internet.
Email compromises and identity theft occur when someone steals your sensitive information, such as a username and password (typically from social media sites). Phishing and fake website scams accessed through SMS and mobile devices are common occurrences.
This new tool lets users input their email address to determine if it has been compromised. The ACSC will advise you on what steps to take to protect yourself from further harm if your email address is found in a data breach. This is important because if your email address is located in a data breach, cybercriminals may try to use it to access other accounts that you have. For example, they may try to reset your passwords or log into your social media accounts.
This new tool from the ACSC is a valuable resource for Australians who may have been the target of a cyber attack.
