A former U.S. military officer is subject to extradition after being traced by the Australian authorities as having the same address as a Chinese hacker.
According to sources, Daniel Edmund Duggan, 54, was arrested last month by Australian Federal Police. It is in line with the request from the U.S. Duggan listed the same Beijing address as a Chinese businessman imprisoned in the United States for conspiring to hack into the computers of U.S. defence contractors, according to officials.
The Australian records indicated that a name Su Bin belonging to a Chinese citizen, lives at the same address as the former military, an apartment in upmarket Chaoyang District. Police found it out after some data investigation that Duggan resided in Beijing last 2014. Before he moved, he was initially living in New South Wales.
After more digging, the U.S. court records state that Su Bin was connected to stealing U.S. military aircraft designs. The event also happened in 2014, two years after he was convicted and put to jail.
Su owned an aviation company named Nuodian Technology. However, the United Nations Entity List recognises the company as one of the trade blacklist companies as it threatens U.S. national security.
Duggan’s arrest came on the same day that it was discovered that the Chinese military was recruiting former British and Australian pilots to train its troops.
“I would be deeply shocked and disturbed to hear that personnel were being lured by a paycheck from a foreign state above serving their own country. I have asked the department to investigate these claims and come back to my office with clear advice on this matter,” stated Richard Marles, Australia’s Defence Minister.
At the time, Marles said he had directed the department to investigate accusations that the flight school, situated in South Africa, had recruited ex-Australian military pilots to work in China.
